Fire Safety: What Is It?

Fire safety is the set of practices intended to reduce the destruction caused by Fire.

Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products.

Fire is the most leading cause of death and loss contributing in industry. Residential fires, workplace fires, and environmental fires such as bushfires result in severe and fatal burn injuries.

Mostly all industries are having the fire risk. All industrial operations are carried out either with use of direct Fire or indirect Fire. There are industries were the raw materials or products which impose fire risk.

If you are an employer or you own premises, you have a legal duty to make sure that your workplace or premises and the people who work there are kept safefrom fire and its effects.
You can do this by:
  • Carrying out a fire risk assessment for your workplace;
  • Using the risk assessment to find out who might be especially at risk if there was a fire (you must keep a record of this information if you employ five or more people);
  • Providing and maintaining the necessary fire precautions to protect the people who use your workplace; and
  • Providing information, instructions and training to your employees about the fire precautions in your workplace.

Fire always starts with small and lead to major disaster. As we know that the fire is the combustion process of 3 elements i.e. Fuel, Oxygen/air and Heat/spark.

Fire is classified based on the type of fuel involved i.e. Solid, Liquid, Gas or metal. There are different types of classification of fire as shown above. The electric fire is a special fire which is due to short circuit in panel.

The control or extinguishing of fire is principally from its definition only. If you remove one of the elements from the fire then it can be controlled i.e. remove fuel, control spark or remove the oxygen supply. The various process of fire control shown in the chart below. There are different mechanisms to control the fire as shown below.

There are different types of fire safety systems available in different industries. i.e. Active system & Passive System.

Proactive System
  1. Smoke Detection System
  2. Heat Detection System.
  3. Spark Detection System

After installation of all these system the working and maintenance service is important part.

Reactive System
  1. Fire Extinguishers
  2. Fire Hydrant System.
  3. Fire Tender
  4. Sprinkler System
  5. Gas Flooding System

Actually to install the fire system is not the way to control the fire. Whatever system is there in the industry the employee should be fully aware about the system as well as how to operate in case of fire. So Fire training for operation of fire extinguishers, fire hydrant and fire tender is most important.

In case of fire the persons involved into the fire-fighting or if an emergency response team he has to focus on 2 critical points i.e. the wind direction and the product of the fire.

As a Glass Industry we have major fire risk either due to fire or fire due to glass leakage from the Furnace. To mitigate the fire risk we have fire extinguishers, fire hydrant system, fire tender, and sprinkler system. We do conduct fire training every week for employee to make them ready ever to fight with fire. We have exhaustive check list for all the system and it is being inspected weekly and monthly to maintain the system working.

The best way to minimize the industrial fire risk is to conduct the fire audit and calculate the fire load. Accordingly the type of fire risk the system needs to be installed.

A Fire risk assessment will help you to decide:
  • What the chances are of a fire starting in your workplace;
  • Whether a fire in your workplace would put people in danger;
  • Whether your existing fire precautions are suitable; or
  • Whether more precautions are needed.

When carrying out your risk assessment:
  • Use your and your employees' knowledge and experience to identify fire hazards in the workplace;
  • Remember to consider work processes that could cause a fire, such as welding or grinding;
  • Take the whole of the workplace into account, including outdoor locations and rooms you rarely use;
  • For small premises, you can assess the workplace as a whole;
  • For larger premises, it will help to divide the workplace into zones such as offices, stores and stairways; and
  • If you share your premises with other businesses, discuss your risk assessment with them.

Conclusion
Fire Prevention and control is very important in today’s competitive world as well for sustaining the business. A well planned fire risk assessment and mitigation is the core tool for any business. Even it helps in maintaining the workplace safety and preferable by employee. It has many tangential benefits as far as the human resource concerned. In today’s advance fire technology world, each industry has to accept and establish a robust fire prevention system. More trainings and awareness to employee about the fire hazards and firefighting process is very important. Also refreshing and maintaining the systems in operations is also a part of its.
