Taking road safety to international standards
Today, during a review meeting with our Transport Department officials, I was informed that nine people die in every 10 hours in our State. It is upsetting that Andhra Pradesh stands 5th in the total number of road accidents in the country.
I'm told that 78.43% of the accidents happen due to driver's fault. Given these appalling figures, I have asked our transport department to fix particular time slot between 3 am to 6 am as resting time for drivers.
We are planning to have "resting zones or lounges" for drivers and increase the number of "way side" areas on National Highways for trucks drivers.
To test driving skills, I will have a policy that will ask for license renewal every three years. We will also hire expert agencies to lay driving tracks in "Driving Schools." All drivers will undergo a driving test. For those who aren't skilled enough, we will have recognised Driving Schools train drivers.
That apart, we will test the health of the vehicle and regulate them strictly. To track vehicles, we will introduce Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based name plates.
We will also have a team analysing where an accident has taken place due to the fault of the driver or the vehicle or due to the road. All roads and national highways in the state will have signs and signals at international standards.
Our government will also have awareness lessons on road safety and signs. I want to implement this on a campaign mode. I strongly believe that we all have the right to live and roads or accidents cannot take away that right from us.
